The Southern Regional Briefs in their final pedagogical form were the result of the joint efforts of Eve Hall, ILO Consultant, based on a set of background papers prepared by Guy Mhone, Director, Wits Graduate School of Public and Development Management (P&DM), Johannesburg. Acknowledgements

The Capacity-Building Programme on Gender, Poverty and Employment is the outcome of fruitful collaboration between the Women in Development Programme of the former Development Policies Department of the ILO and the ILO's International Training Centre in Turin, Italy.

The initiative to synthesize in one volume theoretical approaches and practical ILO experience relating to the gender dimension of poverty, employment and social protection was taken by Azita Berar-Awad, then head of the Women in Development and Social Groups Unit, who guided the development of the whole project. The idea of Daniela Bertino of the Turin Centre to convert this publication into a modular training package and programme resulted in years of intensive efforts to which many ILO specialists and external collaborators contributed.

Amelita King-Dejardin made technical contributions to the various sections of the Modular Package and the training exercises.

At a Validation Workshop held in Turin from 2 to 5 February 1998, ILO specialists from headquarters and the field structure, international experts, and representatives of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU), the International Organization of Employers (IOE), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank, and prominent women's organizations reviewed the first version of the Package and made valuable suggestions for improving and enriching it.
